Loren's Story

NOT MY KID

Being a parent of an addict I never even thought of the possibility that she would overdose. Always a possibility because it happens but not to my kid. No - no way.

THAT IS A TERRIBLE LAW

It wasn’t easy to find places to take a kid; It takes a lot of work. And if you get a bed, you have to jump on it. Unfortunately Molly being 18, 19, 20 I didn't have any say in the matter. Nobody would back me up, none of the legal system would say you’ve gotta go.

She is an adult, nothing you can do. Horse s*&$.

That is a terrible law. It shouldn’t be 18, because kids are too young if you are addicted to a drug that is controlling your life and you are 18 you can’t make the decisions.

I don’t think so. Damnit

KICK HER OUT OF THE HOUSE

I went to these meetings with parents and I said how is my daughter supposed to function in society when she can't even make a decision on what to order in a diner menu and the common response was well she is certainly able to get her drugs every day. How do you win that kind of argument you can't. They are like you have got to let her be, you have got to let her go, kick her out of the house, she’s gotta be on her own to realize she needs help. I never did that. Whether if it was right or wrong who the hell knows but I stood by Molly until the last heartbeat.

DON'T WORRY DADDY I WON'T OVERDOSE

Sure, you can con a therapist in treatment - oh wow she is doing great… but really she’s thinking about where she is going to get the next fix. She told me flat out, I am lying to them. Then she would come home and say don’t worry Daddy I won’t overdose I wouldn’t want to hurt you and Mommy.

A week later she died.

Lines like that stay with you..

THERE ARE THINGS YOU HAVE TO LIVE WITH

There are things you have to live with, I will never walk her down the aisle. And just regular little things that we did, pepperoni pizza is different now. Panera Mac and Cheese I have to think twice before ordering it, best thing ever but who wants to eat it now. Those wonderful movie theater seats in Morristown that you lay down in, the red leather ones. I can’t even go to the movies now because we went to so many movies and laid back and had popcorn.

POET, ARTIST & MUSICIAN

Molly was a poet, an artist and musician. She was also a national champion competitive cheerleader. She wanted to become a beautician. We just fell a little short of accomplishing all those things because of the drugs.

THAT WAS A SPECIAL PLACE

Molly did Kids Cabaret Productions at Brundage Park Playhouse in Randolph for countless years and was involved in their musicals. That was a special place I want to get a bench in honor of Molly, that's one of my goals.

IF MY KID COULD DIE FROM THIS ANYBODY COULD

People are talking about stigma all over the place now. I just saw a sign passing through Boonton, Boonton is a stigma free community. I don't think everyone knows what it means so the efforts are great but they need to keep going because if my kid could die from this anybody could.

IT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN

They say in 2016, around 70 something thousand people died I have to say my daughter was one of them that's just a kick in the ass. It should never have been.
